Posts: 11 | Hey everyone, it's my first time looking for a sound system so there's probably something I should know before I go buying stuff.
With Amps, how do you know what amp to go for with the speakers you buy? Do you just need an amp that has the same or more watts than the entire sound system your running? e.g. A 4000W amp can have up to 4000W of speakers in the car connected to it?

Firstly you gotta decide how much you wanna do up a sound system. The best solution when buying amps and speakers is this as an example... considering it crap hahaha.
If you have a amp that is 1000watts.. you can connect like a 600watt sub, and 2 x 200watt 6x9s or whatever. You can turn it up and it will sound alright but if you have what i have is a 540watt amp , i have a 600watt sub and 200 watt 6x9s. i got the sub on the amp only because of the wattage.. and 200watt 6x9 on the stereo which does the job for me anyway.... but basically what im trying to say is yes.. your correct. 4000watt amp can hold 4000watt speakers / sub

Posts: 33 | ok let me siplify it 4 you\ if you have for example a 5000watt amp you just cant hook up any speaker to it firstly u need to know how many speakers u want to run and then decide how many amps u need to do the job. ok?
now if you have a 600watt sub and 2 200watt 6x9s you will need a 4chanel 1000wat amp reason 4 this is you use one side of the amp in "bridge mode" usualy mono and conect the sub to it on a low pass filter. the other side you put your 6x9s in stereo. run your gains on the amp at 3/4 full. not flat out. let me know when you get your system and ill be happy to inform you of the best way to install it!

Posts: 30 | ok. now heres the REAL lesson. is your amp a 5000 watt RMS? (root mean square) thats what you really need. im guessing your 5000watt amp is nothing but a 1800watt rms. manufacturers make up all these big numbers (to make you think WOW!), which are in fact only what the amp/speaker can run at for only a small amount of time (i.e. 30 secs max!!!!!) before a strange smell followed by a pop, then a weird silence....
heres a senario:
if you have a 5 channel, 4000 watt MAX amp, but is really is say, 1700 watt RMS. and you have 5 sets of speakers, say, 150 watt rms = to 750 watt rms. with a max output of 300 watt max. that meens your speakers will be running OVER their max output while the amp is barly running. as a general rule it is ok to run you amp/speakers up to a third of their max output before you need to let them cool off.
think of this; buy speaker/sub/amp pakages.. that is; a fusion encounter amp, combined with fusion encounter speakers/subs is ideal. (you dont need that specific brand) they where...i guess 'made for eachother'.
