Posts: 18 | Ok so my sister and my mum bought me a VL Berlina 1986 model atm im not sure whats wrong with it... my dad fixed it up alot but the previous owner shreded the pressure plate/fly wheel... literly among other things.
Engine: Rb30 N/A Black (not sure, but i've been told it is)
Gearbox: Turbo Manual 5 speed
Year: 1986
Mods: as far as i know... none
it starts fine, idles fine but when i stab the accel peddle it missfires, this only happens in the low RPM range (not sure what the range is since it doesnt have a RPM/Taco gauge) once it's in the higher rev's it's fine.
And i think there might be a slight problem with the fuel pump, when i start it and it's idling there's a fairly loud sucking noise... haven't heard it before on any other car or VL so im not sure if it's normal or not. and yes it has 1/4 of a tank of petrol :P
Also some of the bits on the engine/gearbox/driveline where replaced with bits from a BT1.
so any help would be useful lol, i know a bit about engine but this outta my knowledge
Later days

Posts: 18 | ok quick update, i started it today (to get everything flowing through it). i revved it up a bit to see if it missfired at a higher RPM and it didn't, instead it backfired... somethings not right, could it be the timing is out?

Posts: 18 | hey mate could be the air flow censor. i had the same problem with my vl and got a new one. it was feeding too much fuel in with the air. it runs like brand new now.

Posts: | Hi there steele, It could be the air flow meter! Does the engine smell like its running rich? anyways i just inherited a vl and had very much the same thing happen. The engine idle was ok but very rich give it a rev ok but when a little warm it would miss back fire then stall but would re-start without a worry it even stalled on me when driving at 80k i soon found that the coil was faulty would work ok when cold then play up when hot put a new one in idle is smoother rev's smoother and a much notacable gain in power. I also changed the in-tank pump and that fixed the sound problem with the tank. it might be an idea to change both pumps anyway being a 86 model like my car there is a good chance that would go too.

Posts: 11 | Yeah, I'm having the same problem too. I got my '86 VL N/A 2 days ago, bought a battery for it yesterday, started it up, it was idling fine, i gave it a rev 5 minutes later, and it misfired a few times. Also it was running very rich. Once the car was warmed up it wasn't misfiring anymore, but still smelled like it was running pretty rich.
So you think if I just get a new air flow meter/censor it should fix it? If so, how much might this cost?

Posts: 33 | I once owned a vk calais with a rb30 conversion and had similar probs, this mite sound abit out there but pull off your passanger kick panel to access the computer un-plug it take it out and see if there is any water in there!just a small amout in the plug holes will make the motor miss fire, back fire, pop, stall. i know this because water leaked behind my windscreen and onto my comp. try it! and see. as for the sucking noise check to see if there is any unpluged vacume hoses coming off the inlet manafold! cheers As for the air flow meter check this> un-plug it get your hands on a multi meter put the wires on the two outer most pins of the sensor, turn the multi meter to
'ohms" and see what reading you get. it should say 380 if not turn the little flat screwdriver bit on the side if it untill you get it to 380. hope these help Cheers.

Posts: 11 | OK, thanks Greg, I shall try these, but I'm not gonna mess with them myself, I shall get a guy I know at a car yard to check it out for me, all he will ask for in return is to shout him a bottle of scotch lol, not too bad if ya ask me, he's also gonna do a full check on the car, tell me everything that needs to be done for RWC for a bottle of scotch. cheers, I shall let ya know how it goes
