Posts: 2 | hey, this is my first post and i was wondering if theres an easy way to get the original head unit out of my VL as i want to put in a new one. i think you need the key type things like some aftermarket stereos have but i dont have these, does anyone know how to do it without or can u show me what shape the keys are so i can make some from sheet metal or something? i dont really want to break the original radio if possible

i had the exact same problem.
the easiest way i found to get out the stereo was using a piece of wire or metal to unhook the springs holding the clips in on both sides of the head unit.
then i took out the ashtray underneath then pulled out the antenna from the back of the head unit.
then pushed the head unit forward from behind by putting your hand through the space that the ashtray is in.
i didnt have a wiring harness on mine so i ended up cutting the wires but hopefully you know what your doing.
it worked for me so good luck.

yeah it gets a bit like that hopefully your wiring for the speakers is much better than mine because the speakers didnt have seperate wires to the head unit and had to end up hooking up new wiring to the new head unit which sucked.

Posts: 14 | mate if you want to do it the proper way without fucking anything up you have to take off the whole dash just to undo one screw which connects the unit to the chassis. i know its bullshit and it take about 3-4 hours to do and its really complicated to put back together.
Shortcut... get a air saw and slide it in on top of the deck. pull the trigger and the deck slides out. 2 second job...
Choice is yours
