Posts: 15 | I have cracked the head on my VL turbo. I need advise....Am I better off welding it? Or getting another head? I have plans of getting 300kws out of her so will welding be ok? Also my block is O ringed so do I have to replace the O rings or can they be left in? What head gasket will be best to use with the O ringed block? I have had so many people tell me so many different things so am not real sure. Has anyone on here done this before with an O ringed block?

Posts: 241 | what do you mean by o-ringed block? do you mean the oil rings on the pistons?
turbo heads HAVE turbo gaskets they are o-ringed to help prevent blow outs between cylinders and are on all turbo models do you get a warranty with the head if not you can use a n/a head and swap the cam, valve stems ,lifters springs etc

Posts: 191 | Why weld the old head?just get an RB30 head and use your rocker gear and cam.
There is NO difference betweeen the VLT head and the standard RB30 head, just the camshaft is different, you've probably been told this already but its correct anyway.
If you've done some kays or run it at high boosts most of the time then replace the o rings,if not then leave them be.
If you know the original thickness of the old head gasket then get the same one,if not then when they surface grind a head then use a thicker head gasket.
Felpro head gaskets are great gaskets so get one, thickness im not sure coz i dont know exactly what sort of work you have done to your engine, maybe 1mm thick or so head gasket.hope this helps

Posts: 15 | Thanks Makka at least you know what an O ringed block is! Was only considering welding because I was told it would be alot stronger.

Posts: 15 | Cool thanks mate! I want to do it properly now for when I bolt on all the goodies. Don't want it to shit itself as soon as it hits big power.

My R31 cracks 480rwKW using just the standard RB30E head, just got a big cam, injectors ect ect.
Just so ya know the they take big power anyday so you dont have 2 worry about it shitn anything.

Posts: 15 | Nice work! What colour is it? Was just worried about welding the head & then it not being able to cope with the power. I know these motors are capable of massive figures. I won't be doing much to my motor apart from bolt ons. That's the only reason I love VLs so much because of the Nissan RB30. Best motors! Do you have many pictures of your car?

Posts: 191 | Hey mate,yeah i do have photo's somewhere!
The colour is like the morpheous purple that see on the new VE commodores, but without the pearl groundcoat,so it looks a bit different, still nice n metallicy.i have 2 of these, one is my runner,n the other one never sees the light of day.
The next VL im building, were looking around 550kw but that wont be for awhile now due to the cars i have to get finished at work.were goin a 30 block n maybe a 25 or 26 head.

Posts: 15 | Nice work! 1 of my mates has an RB30 bottom end with a 26 head built at Nizpro. Goes hard on half boost at the moment. Will be running some times hopefully in the next few months be good to see how it goes.

Posts: 191 | Yeah, nizpro have built some fucking wicked engines!i like the 25/26/30 combinations that they build,i especially like the 26/30 they built for ben visconti, that thing used to rev to 12,000rpm easy, not bad for a 6 aye?it had a massive torque curve from what i can remember,576rwkw with a 2 speed powergilde, its on fullboost live vol.1 but yeah it be good when ur mate gets his one runnin some times.

Posts: 15 | Yeah my mates engine combo is pretty much the same but just hasn't got the fuel system to make that power yet. It is run by MoTeC M800 & has a 3 speed trimatic built at Yarra Valley Autos but he will eventually get a powerglide built. On the engine dyno it made approx 390kw on 15psi. Yeah that DVD is the best! Can't wait until they bring out the next 1!
